An alluring, breathy, sensual, supernaturalistic LP by the duo of Jova Radevska and Mark Vernon, with a theme delving into the unconscious, for lost and unrealised dreams and ideals, and how they are nurtured, then realised, abandoned or destroyed. At times Radevka’s voice hovers somewhere between Bjork and Beth Gibbons, and on the opening track, The Dreamcatchers, a mood and atmosphere is immediately in place, with dark, sense of foreboding with bass line and spidery strings. On the album they are joined by some excellent veteran musicians including Rob Ellis (who plays with PJ Harvey) and saxophonist Terry Edwards (Nick Cave, Gallon Drunk, The Jesus & Mary Chain). Former Song of the Day Addictions is gorgeous, acoustic singalong pop. The track, Maybe, which also has an acoustic video version, is a crisp, gently catchy, but twisting love song knotted with a feeling complex enigmas and enchantments on a lush bed of chamber-pop. Other standouts include the thrumming, passionate indie build of Hurt Like No Hurt, the delicacy of The Beating, and the more experimental, proggier closing number Dreamcatchers (Make Up Your Mend). Overall, a mesmeric, esoteric mix of mediaeval folk, dreamy electronica, afrobeat, esoteric jazz and indie pop. Reaching beautifully for the intangible, and serenely immersive. Out on Yova Music.
