A mesmeric new album that began as poetry book by the American artist Camae Ayewa mixing jazz, blues, soul, hip-hop and spoken word in her own form of Black Quantum Futurism group, her multi-artform fusion of black history ontology. She’s had a broad, innovative career from the Philadelphia experimental scene, a residency at Cern and a teacher in Los Angeles. With a dozen or mor, it is awash with unpredictability and profound utterance, instruments tinkling, rolling, swelling and swinging. Standouts include the arresting opener Umzanzi with Mary Lattimore, the twittering percussive April 7th with Keir Neuringer, the smooth R&B of Golden Lady with Melanie Charles but also with her, the oddball electronica Woody Shaw, Barely Woke with Wolf Weston, all the way to the 18th final track which articulately seeks to define jazz’s meaning - Thomas Stanley Jazzcodes Outro. There is also a 14-minute film also shown below. Out on ANTI-Records.
