A new LP of extraordinary experiment and scattershot psychedelic pop kaleidoscopes from the eclectic and unpredictably inventive mind of the prolific Kevin Barnes and band from Athens, Georgia. Funk, rock, R&B and much more collide in this tumble dryer of wonderful oddity, decorated with strange, striking linguistic tricks and wordplay of lyric. From the start this album hits you with two of the most challenging numbers, the abstract funk and synth of Music Hurts The Head, the crash-bang bizarre 2 Depressed 2 Fuck before the far gentler, guitar psych folk of Rude Girl On Rotation, which despite its beautifully sweet melody and finger-picking, completely throws you with arrestingly droll lines such as” “I will cry if I’m getting attention, stepping on scorpions to lose my erection”. Other standouts include the strangely funky number Yung Hearts Bleed Free, the deliciously catchy 70s piano pop, disco funk and surrealist fantasy of Soporific Cell, the thundering dance jam of PI$$ PI$$, or jazzy laments of Sea Mines That Mr Gone. Dozens of albums along since this all began in the mid-1990s, Barnes continues to churn out the weird and wonderful. Out on Polyvinyl Records.
