Evocative, eccentric, strange and inventive album by the veteran Japanese musician of Ainu ancestry, Oki Kano 加納 沖, brings together the traditional stringed five-stringed harp, the tonkori, into a fusion with other instruments and styles, from folk to electronica and reggae. Beautifully tender singing and birdcalls by guests Yayo Boo and Noda Tin come also on Kai Kai As To (Rippling Lake), and another guest, Umeko Ando, also provides provides wonderful vocals on several tracks particularly Iuta Upopo (Pestle Song) with other singers, and there’s a lovely bass clarinet on the galumphing Iso Kaari Irehtho (Bear Trap Rhythm), while Yaykateyar Dub (Love Dub) brings in a reggae rhythm and add further cross-cultural elements. Afghan Herbal Garden seems to incorporate an Hammond-like organ too. Charming and eccentric, mixing the old with the new. Out on Mais Um Discos.
