A new album of abstract indie charm by the New York trio, at times chugging and spluttering in DIY arrhythmic style like some battered old Citroën 2CV, it also has a sweet sounding shambolic quality that grows on you. Their work is simultaneously simple and complex, with constant changes of pace, but with oddball chords and melodies also feels carefree and lo-fi throwaway, perhaps not unlike the English trio that make up the work of Serafina Steer's Bas Jan project. Many of the 16 songs are not much more than 1.30 in length, and Hey! typifies their sense of eccentric noodly fun. Something In the Way extends the exploration a little, and The Way That You Do ends with a rather beautiful section of unaccompanied vocal harmony that echoes more ethereal styles, a more down-to-earth version of something done by Medieval Baebes. This album with both annoy and charm with its stop-start silliness and at times sauciness (All Over My Face, or Eggs n' Bac') but it has a basement DIY sensibility that is perfect for lockdown times.
