Like an x-rated character from Avatar, the 24-year-old American singer and rapper Ashton Nicole Casey’s burst-on-the-scene full debut is full of blueness, giggles, sass and sex, admired by guests Grimes, Princess Nokia and Kelis, and Miley Cyrus is also a big fan. With songs such as Slumber Party featuring Princess Nokia, a booty call for oral sex, this is explicit and sweary bubblegum pop that invites oodles of grinding dancing moves and the occasional drag queen slut drop. But through all the sexy, bitchy affectations, male dressing downs and explicitness, there are plenty of clever sounds, blips and pops, such as on Drunk On With My Friend, and behind that, some clever and catchy melodies, such as the chorus of Deal With It (with Kelis), in which the opening line is “I don’t need a man I need a puppy, allergic to you every time you touch me, emotional material for dummies …” There’s not a lot of ambiguity or nuance about this album, particularly with the closing track, Clitoris! The Musical, but it’s certainly got plenty of feisty bite. Out on Parlophone.
