After last year’s promising debut, Souvenirs, the Devon trio return with a very pleasing, catchy fusion of electro-pop and krautrock, one that again echoes Django Django, but also some 80s sounds reminiscent of New Order and The Cure. Of the latter, a familiar thrumming guitar and bass is sounds is particularly present on Takes Me Over, and Spaces clips along at a pace and glitters with jangly guitars and a rather New Order-ish guitar riff. The overall theme is inspired by the childhood home of vocalist and guitarist, Matt Board, and navigating the grief of recent parental loss. Yet this album is filled with lifting melodies, designed to express life-affirming human connections through family and friendships.
Million Times Over and closing track Underwater are more wistful, carefully controlled, noisy shoegaze, but mostly though album bounces with sprightly krautrock, spacey energy, from opener to More, to Simmering, Our History or Sister. A strong, very enjoyable follow-up that really pulls you in with its momentum and mix of dark thrums, driving rhythms, synth sounds and the distinctive high voice of vocalist and guitarist, Matt Board. Out on Full Time Hobby.
