Taking a title cue from Miles Davis, a brilliant, landmark 19-track debut LP by the supremely gifted British jazz drummer variously exploring and re-interpreting many sides of 70s funk, reggae and afrobeat, joined by a stellar group of musicians and vocalists. These include a core band of Charlie Stacey (keys/synths), Venna (saxophone), Alexander Bourt (percussion), as well as many great additions: Chronixx, Masego, Jamilah Barry, Tom Misch, Elijah Fox, Shabaka Hutchings, Miles James, Sheila Maurice Grey, Nathaniel Cross, Theon Cross and the Chineke! Orchestra, as well as voices of Leon Thomas and among others his young daughter and and late mother, the respected Iyengar yoga teacher Barbara Hicks, in which she explains ways to deal with back pain. From past Song of the Day the title track to Afro Cubanism, to Raisins Under The Sun (with Hutchings), to Rust (with Misch), to Pon Di Plaza (with Chronixx) all the way to closer Cowrie Charms, the sheer breadth, pace and skill of Dayes’s drumming and the sheer collective sense of musical contribution is breathtaking in its scope, imagination and invention. Potential album of the year. Out on Brownswood Recordings.
