The Dallas, Texas choral-folk-rock ensemble fronted by Tim DeLaughter return with a first set of originals since 2014’s Psychphonic (2020’s Afflatus was covers LP), here with a bright, uplifting evocative return that characteristically echoes the gentle psychedelia of Pink Floyd and The Flaming Lips. Since their rise in the early 2000s of a vast group in white, the group looked like a cult, but happily without the negative associations, and this album is certainly has a spiritual, heavenly bliss about it, not of religious zeal, but hitting familiar territory with sweet rich vocal harmonies and melodies, acoustic guitars, piano, orchestra and soaring melodies. Highlights include opener Section 44 (Galloping Seas), Section 45 (Wishful, Brave, And True), Section 47 (Got Down To The Sail), Section 48 (Shadows On The Hillside), Section 49 (Hop Off The Fence) with a little Strawberry Fields opening, and the dramatic, almost operatic curtain closer Section 52 (Morning Sun I Built The Stairs). Will it save our souls? Probably not, but it’s certainly uplifting, often beautiful work. Out on Good Records Recordings.
