The postpunk Indie quartet from Norway return with their second LP after 2019’s Birthday with more wonderfully energetic work in this short, sharp selection of 10 three-minute songs. Named after a Studio Ghibli animated feature about raccoon dogs who use their bellies as drums, the characteristics of the band remain eccentric and charming. Comparisons to Deerhoof, in particular singer and bassist Satomi Matsuzaki, with the high voice of Pomo Poko's singer Ragnhild Fangel Jamtveit, who marries a mixture of the sweet and angelic with the shrill. But perhaps the standout of the band is the extraordinary scratchy rhythm guitar work of Martin Miguel Almagro Tonne, who is currently among the most inventive musician of that type around. Pom Poko's sheer exuberant, joyful energy is far better caught in a live show where they are a very tight outfit, but until that's possible, this album exemplifies their excellence, particular on the tracks Cheater, Like A Lady, My Candidacy and Andy Goes To School. Out on Bella Union.
