The south London band return with a slightly developed sound from 2018’s Songs Of Praise. Opening Alphabet is very much in the shoutier IDLES mode, but then with second track Nigel Hitter and later Great Dog, and most of the album, they are more postpunk, with elements of Art Brut or Squid, with Born in Luton, March Day and 6/11 held together by clever, jagged rhythm guitar and Charlie Steen's half-shouty, half-talky delivery. The volume rops to more of Baxter Dury whisper at the beginning of Snow Day and Human For a Day, in which the latter has echoes of Berlin-era Bowie. Overall though, a very fine second LP, building on the full-on of the first with greater dynamics and range. Out on Dead Oceans.
