Stormy, dark, passionate, punchy, with biting lyrics, this powerful sixth album by the Detroit-formed post-punk quartet is inspired by the metaphorical desolation of the titular landscape and getting on with life even when it feels impossibly hard. Following their 2020 caustically ironic album, Ultimate Success Today, this album is in part fuelled by the death of the mother of frontman Joel Casey and a sense of colossal transition that has required. Standouts include the hauntingly restless Make Way, For Tomorrow, the single Elimination Dances, the oddball Polacrilex Kid (taken from the name for nicotine gum), the fuzzy, energetic 3800 Tigers, the rumbling, stormy Fulfillment Center, the disturbing We Know The Rats, and closer Rain Garden. A strong record to put alongside the work of Australia’s excellent Tropical Fuck Storm. Out on Domino and also via Bandcamp.
