The LA rock band have had their ups and down, bu this, a double LP, is their best for some time, largely perhaps due to the return of guitarist John Frusciante, key to their heyday albums, that one captures much of their original chemistry, funk and energy, if at times slightly mellower. This isn’t Blood Sugar Sex Magik or Californication, but how Frusciante seems to galvanise the four-piece with the now moustachioed Anthony Kiedis, Flea, and Chad Smith, bringing out the best in each other. Frusciante’s poise and turn of pace seems to command some discipline and focus across the 17 tracks. Standouts including opener Black Summer, the almost Who-like build up of These Are The Ways, Here Ever After, the horn-infused funk of Aquatic Mouth Dance, Poster Child, and Veronica. Out on Warner Brothers.
