This fabulous third LP by the 67-year-old soul singer is produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, and filled with gritty, goosebump moments, his soaring and tender delivery bringing out every emotion. Finley’s life is poured into these songs, and it shows. One of eight children, he’s a US Army veteran, and has had no shortage of life experience to give every note heart and gristle. Divorce, house fires, an automobile accident, and working as a carpenter up until his 60s, he became blind with glaucoma. He also became a semi-finalist on America's Got Talent. The song My Story is a soul number that captures the ‘never too late’ mentally that has kept him going. Backed by Auerbach on guitar and an excellent band including some brass sections, every song is gem - from opener Souled Out On You to the upbeat Make Me Feel Alright, he voice goes high like Al Green and deep like John Lee Hooker, with a touch of gospel on the tender song I Can Feel Your Pain, and even a dash of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins in parts. There’s a rural theme here too, where Finley talks of being pulled towards his “country ways” compared to living in the harsh city in the song Country Child, as well as Country Boy, and the title track. Overall, an absolutely timeless gem of an album, feelings and experiences filtered out of tragedy. It really is never too late, and not without evidence that Auerbach describes Finley as the greatest living soul singer. Out on Easy Eye Sound.
