The London-born, gentle-and-high-voiced singer-musician and acclaimed Mercury winner for his 2017 debut, Process, finally returns, after many other projects, with an intricate, sensitive, ethereal follow-up. He’s joined by a host of talented guest singers and musicians across the jazz, soul and pop spectrum, including Yaeji, Léa Sen, Sheila Maurice Grey, Ibeyi, Morgan Simpson, Yussef Dayes, Laura Groves and Kwake Bass. While Process was borne out of grief for his mother, Lahai, which is Sampha’s middle name as well as a family traditional name, is more about ancestry and is something of a celebration of his daughter who was born in 2020. Delicate electronica, beats, piano, other sounds and a variety of sampled voices populate this album, from opener Stereo Colour Cloud (Shaman’s Dream) and on onwards in which there are existential reflections on self, history, time, inheritance, relationships and more. Standouts include Spirit 2.0, Only, What If You Hyntotise Me?, Dancing Circles and Rose Tint. A unique, indefinable artist who seems to float with a sense of both the light and the heavy, capturing joy and pain. Out on Young Records.
