Hugely enjoyable debut LP by the South Korean K-pop and hip-hop collective, who bring a heady mix of slick delivery and experiment with funk, pop, indie rock and playfully inventive changes of pace. Performing in Korean and English, there’s clearly oodles of talent, mischief, humour and energy at play here, expressed also in their videos, from the tight funk of Moving Forward, to the upbeat catchy positivity of Trust Yourself. But there’s much more creative oddness here, from the esoteric jazz morphing into New York style hip hop on opener BTB, the bouncing pop of Buriburi, the heavy rock of Sudden Attack, the postpunk of Riot, or Scumbag, the soul-jazz-funk-hiphop mix of UP!, the thumming indie rock of SOS, or the melodramatic sense of movie soundtrack and prog rock on Kamehameha, a song song that expresses the psychology of a heavily drunk character, inspired by a Korean alcohol game familiar to all adult Koreans with the mistaken sense of drunk confidence represented in a Dragon Ball. Chaotic, creative, agile, mischievous fun. Out on AWAL.
