Uniquely striking, experimental space-trip hip-hop, jazz, funk, electronica and Afrofuturism by the Seattle combo of Ishmael Butler, aka Palaceer Lazaro (formerly Butterfly in the 90s trio Digable Planets) and multi-instrumentalist Tendai "Baba" Maraire. Their eighth album, this is truly otherworldly work – spacey bleeps, chirps, beats, deep, whispering, echoing disembodied voices, streams of consciousness, conjuring up something somewhere between Saul Williams and Sun Ra, very much in its own dimension. From opener Exotic BP (with Purple Tate Nate) to the darkly ambient Goat closer Take Me To Your Leader (with Lavarr The Star) it’s a musical space trip. The single, Angela (featuring Irene Barber and Stas Thee Boss) has elements of just recognisable deep 70s funk to help give some anchoring of genre familiarity through the woozy, dream-like oddness, but otherwise this is an interstellar trip to a definite elsewhere. Out on Sub Pop.
