Something of a perfect pairing – two superstars come together with a shared niche passion for 70s funk and soul, and with guests including bassists Thundercat and Bootsy Collins, the latter doing vocal introductions, this brings rich, scintillating results. Leave the Door Open is a smoochy smooth soul number with Mars giving one of his best vocal performances, and After Last Night is another in the mode of a sexy Barry White number, one of several that revive those sounds of seminal Philadelphia soul groups such as The Delfonics and The O’Jays, with Put on A Smile, another standout of that type, with Smokin Out The Window, along with the more skippy Skate. Meanwhile Fly As Me, including a James Brown sample, is a cracking upbeat funk number, as is is 777. Overall top notch retro material, with just a sprinkle of irony along with all the joy in performance. Dernst "D'Mile" Emile II sprinkles extra magic part of the writing and production process. Out on Aftermath Entertainment / Atlantic Records.
