With perhaps best yet, certainly since reforming in 2014, and 11th overall since forming in 1994, a passionate, catchy, powerful, defiant LP by Portland-based singer-guitarists Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker with searingly brilliant postpunk, rock and pop Fuelled in part by the death of Brownstein’s mother and stepfather in a car crash in autumn 2022, it’s packed with articulate rage, heartbreak and stormy passion, particular on the explosive, stylish opener – Hell. But that single, and former Song of the Day is far from the only standout, vocals and guitar playing constantly poignant and visceral. Needlessly Wild, for example has punchy and fabulous guitar screaming riffs. Say It Like You Mean has a scarred vulnerability, Hunt You down a sparse post-punk sound, the defiant Dress Yourself (“give me the madness, give me the memory”) all the way to wonderfully strong closing track, Untidy Creature with its breathy opener and stormy swaggering sound. Produced by John Congleton. Every lyric and note feels richly hewn by experience, honest and raw. Outstanding. Out on Loma Vista Recordings.
