After a series of strong singles and a couple of EPs, the London quartet and Goldsmith’s graduates’ full debut LP is explosive, taut, dark, energetic, angry post-punk brimming with inventive, rhythmic dynamism. Particularly outstanding in his musicianship is vocalist and drummer Sean Harper, whose playing is particularly impressive when witnessed live. After the intricately rhythmic opener Open Ground comes the stormy rage of I’ll Do What I Can, a song all about difficult forgiveness. Mental health issues are addressed in the stop-start menace of Bright Night, financial pressures in East Flat Crows, but perhaps most entertaining is the catchy oddball tale and sound of single Strange Neighbour. All the way to final track, Frame, perhaps most obvious strength of the band is their clever, atypical cross-patterned riffs and rhythms, at times reminiscent of XTC. With such tight musicianship, a very promising, punchy debut. Out on So Young Records.
