An entrancing, rippling, nimble-fingered classical score newly recorded by the multi-talented New York singer-songwriter, written for two pianists, notably here Timo Andres and Conor Hanick, and originally commissioned for a 2019 ballet in collaboration with choreographer Justin Peck. The performance by the Houston ballet also featured 11 dancers, and the music here is evocative of movement, variously abstract, skittish, romantic, passionate, melancholy, ecstatic, but always filled with energy. The listening experience is best from first to seventh and final track, opener Esktasis, followed by five other one-word descriptive titles, ending with the playfully named And I Shall Come To You Like A Stormtrooper In Drag Serving Imperial Realness. Stevens is a self-taught pianist, and you can variously hear influences here, from Debussy to Stravinsky, Philip Glass to Bruce Hornsby. Delicate, virtuosic, Out on Asthmatic Kitty Records.
