Filled with rage, simmering visceral self-hatred and raw emotional examination, but also many beautiful harmonies and dynamics, the fifth album by Kesha Rose Sebert (formerly Ke$ha), is fuelled by the fallout of a music industry lawsuit, but also her restless creativity. There’s a mish-mash of commercial sob-story piano pop (Hate Me Harder), gospel harmonies, electronica, ambient New Age spiritualism (such as the Ajay Bhattacharyya on All I Need Is You or Only Love Reprise), as well some seething lyrics such as “all the doctors and lawyers have cut the tongue out of my mouth” on Fine Line, or on the raw, exposed Eat The Acid, “you don’t wanna be changed like it changed me”, echoing a warning from her own mother. But in between the bitter, biting verses, Only Love Can Save Us Now is also strangely uplifting with its stirring chorus. Overall, an oddball self-therapy album, but also filled with fascinating unexpected moments. Out on Kemosabe Records.
