Much hyped of course, and hardly needing a mention here, but after her lauded foray into folkier territory on albums Folklore and Evermore, the American superstar returns to mainstream synth-pop that’s dark, intelligent, self-deprecatory, small-hours state of mind, dead-of-night songs that are even slightly understated. Standout tracks are Snow On The Beach with a very strong melody and the equally strong presence of guest Lana Del Rey; the dark, broody and slightly sinister breakup song, Maroon, with its mix of electronica and shoegazey guitar; the self-loathing, anti-stereotyping Jackal and Hyde-idea Anti Hero; the hazey electro of Labyrinth, Lavender Haze; and the punchy, vengeful Vigilante Shit. There isn’t a huge amount of range here, but it’s quality 80s-style sheen electro-pop by a undeniably bright star in the dead-of-night frame of mind. Out on Republic Records.
