A first LP for seven years by the American-British duo of vocalist Alison Mosshart and guitarist Jamie Hince is a gritty, glamorous thunder-crack storm of blistering garage rock and simmering noir-pop. Opener New York typifies with abrupt, dramatic, rhythmic horn blasts, muscular guitar riffs an Mosshart’s compelling vocal style singing lines such as “You taste just like New York Before a storm takes hold / You race like you are high and armed /And I’m alarmed.” LA Hex is another standout, a breathy, sexy vocal duet above a thrumming bass line, interspersed with a shuddering guitar, and a powerful gospel-feel rising chorus: “I’ve still got my ways, you know.” Other standouts include Love And Tenderness, 103, the ghostly Wasterpiece, Kingdom Come, and the title track. Dramatic, gripping, grand and edgy, and at times reminiscent of their breakthrough work of the early 2000s. Out on Domino.
