Stylishly funky, slick and soulful hip-hop and R&B with dark twists and tender moments come aplenty in this alluring second album by the eclectically talented Zimbabwean-born, Australian-raised and now Los Angeles-based artist. There’s a wealth of buzzing, busy, wooozy inventive sounds here spanning a range of genres, and Maidza has described this as a breakup album, not from a person, but from an old way of life, emerging like a wriggling, writhing butterfly from the chrysalis in a cycle of rebirth. The playful range of sounds come with help from Canadian producers Stint and Kaytranada, as well as Australia’s Flume on the strong, industrial buzzing flavour of Silent Assassin. Love and Other Drugs sets the tone as opener, but other standouts include the menacing WUACV, the catchy crunch and staccato chords of the more soulful pop of Out of Luck (featuring Lolo Zouaï & Amber Mark), the sexy, slow funk of WASP, the tight rapping of Ring-a-Ling, the catchy Gone To The West, and the futuristic pop of Our Way. Inventive, restless, sharp and at times beguilingly bizarre. Out on 4AD.
