Markedly different the 2021’s lockdown sample-heavy Distractions album, the Nottingham band’s 14th LP is a beautifully mature release with Memphis soul, Latin-American and other influences, but as ever, the distinctive understated sound of Stuart Staples’ voice, and its subtle, close-mic crooner/ quiet Bryan Ferry quality. That 70s soul style comes immediately to to the fore with horns and backing vocals on opener New World, or stripped back style with soft orchestral elements on Don’t Walk, Run. But perhaps the core of this album is the gentle bossa nova of Nancy, the deliciously slow Falling, The Light, and especially the truly gorgeous waltz-time of Always A Stranger, which has the beautifully smoky aura of their mid-90s breakthrough period, with songs with as Tiny Tears. Soon to Be April is also has lovely, dream-like romantic, swooning quality. Three decades into their career then very fine wine oak-matured, that tastes better on each sip. Out on Lucky Dog / City Slang.
