After 2019’s brilliant The Age of Immunology, a wondrously evocative and playful new LP by the London-based psychedelic experimentalists tinkering with krautrock, jazz and the avant-garde with sprinkles of Sun Ra to Alice Coltrane, Martin Denny and Ennio Morricone. Singer and multi-instrumentalist Cathy Lucas, drummer Valentina Magaletti, bassist Susumu Mukai, and synth/guitar player Phil MFU weave many surprises incorporating a wide variety of other instruments, electronic sounds and voices, from the eerie flutes, xylophone, long sung notes and syncopated rhythms of opener Big Moonlight to the clicking electronica, deep bass and wah-wah guitar of Phase One Million, the gradual Can-style krautrock build of the shimmeringly strangely hallucinogenic Zuum, the minimalist thrum of Tub Egypt, or the funk workings of The Lift. Every number presents joyous discovery and musical inventive wit, but perhaps the centrepiece is In Cucina, an evocative instrumental - In Cucina - which, with woodwind, strings and much more which evokes some kind of exotic electronica soundtrack from 1970s documentary about Brazil. A joy from start to finish. Out on Fire Records.
