As shown by the single Rare To Wake, profiled earlier this year, this fifth solo album by the LA singer-songwriter brings beautifully written songs performed with acoustic restraint, rich vocal harmonies and maturity. Lay something of a veteran of another world of far noisier music, garage rock and more, touring with Ty Segall as well as being in the band Feels, but this album is no side project, as she is also an outstanding folk artist with some comparisons to Nick Drake. Other than Rare To Wake, these slow, surefooted tracks also include standouts A Thread To Find, Sure, the unaccompanied Awaken and Allow, Geist, and a cover of Syd Barrett’s Late Night. An exquisite late night album indeed, to be enjoyed by the fireside with a glass of wine, or on a solitary country walk. Gorgeous. Out on Sub Pop.
