Dramatic, declamatory, stylised and immensely fun, this witty, dandy post-punk pop debut with thrumming bass lines and shimmering synths by the Glasgow six-piece has echoes of the 1980s from Associates, Bowie, Human League, Rocky Horror Picture Show to Sparks. Be An Actor typifies the sheer level of theatrical panache, vocals soaring and trilling melodramatically to make strong comparisons to Billy Mackenzie and even David Bowie’s 80s phase. Other standouts include opener Weightless, Selfish Lover, Cut Your Hair, and How Cool Are You?. The Costume Change is a oddball piece of spacey, synth-psychedelia, Hold Yourself As High As Her is an even further high camp, strutting piece of disco rave, while Macilent mixes in some goth rock in the manner of Sisters of Mercy. Endlessly entertaining, completely over the top, but also a fabulously crafted, stylish and studied performance. Out on Lucky Number Music.
