New sleazy mischief and hedonistic humour at the hands of the British krautrock-style disco-pop funksters fronted by the engaging American drawl of Clams Baker Jr – the gang with something that certainly is, as billed, crunchy on the outside, smooth on the inside. It would be hard to beat 2019’s Tainted Lunch for a title nor indeed its sheer bite and array of belting singles, but this release still ripples with catchy silliness as well as hilarious anger, particularly the super-sweary Wild Flowers, or Fatso. With acclaimed usual producer Dan Carey unable to return due to a dose of Covid, the controls were fortuitously taken over by Joe Goddard and Al Doyle of Hot Chip, who have given a different, a more widescreen polish to the band’s natural, hedonistic chaos. Other standouts include Eight Minute Machine, Twitchin’ In The Kitchen, which has echoes of Toni Basil’s Mickey, and the hangover restlessness of closing track Greasin’ Up Jesus. A must-see in a sweaty live setting. Out on Bella Union.
