Magic is waved indeed in this experimental psychedelic rock by the now Los Angeles quartet of Cory Hanson, Evan Burrows, Robert Cody and Evan Backer with great, ghostly echoes of a British flavour, particularly Radiohead and Verve. It’s been five years since their last LP, Laughing Matter, what with Hanson working on solo projects, but this is a wonderfully atmospheric return, packed with fabulously strange sounds, sharp guitar distortions, bells, or a smooth swathe of orchestral strings. From the percussive heartbeats and edgy reverb of opener Hangman with some echoes of Pink Floyd, seamlessly moving into Curtain Call, the punchy vibrant pace of Mistletoe, to the dark, alluring, slightly jazzy, Doors-like shuddering experimentation of JJ, the explosive epic feel of former Song of the Day Smile, Lifeboat’s dark waters and psychedelic wanderings, the clanging noise rock of High Time with a sound like a rusty swinging sign but with tender vocals reminiscent of Richard Ashcroft, all the way to closer Seaweed Head, it’s an excellent, evocative adventure in dynamic sound rendered by superb musicianship. Out on Drag City Records.
