The Amsterdam collective fronted by Willem Smit return with a lyrical witty, word-playful, inventive LP of DIY indie pop of of multiple instruments, styles and moods, and retain that sense of mischief seen in 2022’s debut Big Love Blanket. Opener Upper Ferntree Gully is a long, restless, sprawling proggy jam that settles into an shoegaze-y indie groove around the three-minute mark, but the album really hits its stride with the mischievous meta-song I Can Be Your Personal Trainer, with shades of Jonathan Richman, EELS or even Smog, and above all the catchy, piano-based, punchy brass of Cyan, the melodic indie rock of Round, or the pumping power of Intangible. But there’s more to discover and enjoy here such as the krautrocky pace of You Better Start Scrubbing, rounded off by the 80s synth style of closer What Am I Supposed To Say, with playfully jumps then into grungy rock. Restless fun with musical reference and deft jest. Now signed to and out on Bella Union.
