Excellent second album of dark-themed retro synth and electro pop by the young band from Hebden Bridge fronted by singer-songwriter Syd Minsky-Sargeant with shades of Cabaret Voltaire, OMD and Depeche Mode. Standout tracks include Widow, which like many of their songs, includes classic falling keyboard chord changes, but is also strangely uplifting for a song with dysopian lyrics about our dysfunctional world, such as “Misery is bliss to me/ I love you now you’re dead you see.” Other highlights include Circumference, Ploys, 19 and Cut. Syd was only 16 was he wrote some of these numbers, 17 when the debut album came out, and only 20 now, so his maturity is impressive. Onwards and upwards. Out on Heavenly Recordings.
