A magically smooth, beautiful fusion of jazz, soul, funk and reggae in this debut by the superb London-born, Nottingham-based singer, whose fluid, dreamy voice captures the emotions in the intonations and nuances in her eloquent delivery. She’s released several previous EPs, but this full debut is produced Dave Okumu and Melo-Zed – co-written with Zac Cayenne-Elliott. Over the fabulous 14 tracks in an hour of music, standouts include Bad Company, in which Yazmin focuses on, but also externalises her own over-thinking emotions in the form of her fictional character Priscilla, the contradictory “devil on my shoulder who told me she’s prettier than me”. There’s also Late Night People, the intimate Pieces, the timeless, everlasting flow of Legacy, the rich reggae thump of Tomorrow’s Child and From A Lover, the subtle, woozy funk of Sign and Signal, and exquisitely languid closing track, Sea Glass, with rippling strings and gentle piano, and written when on, and evoking feel of the coast. Gorgeously rich and nuanced, a candidate for album of the year. Out on Own Your Own Records / Believe.
