A poetic word taken from the Latin lacus and French or Italan lacustre, this shimmering liquid of an adjective means relating to, formed in, living in, or growing in lakes, lake-like or positioned by a lake. A lacustrian is a person who lives beside a lake, and somewhere that is interlacustrine is situated between two lakes, such as the Swiss town of Interlaken. Lacustrine deposits are sedimentary rock formations which formed in the bottom of ancient lakes.
It’s all about lakes, in short. But what about songs about lakes? Here are a few to help water the imagination. First, a beautiful piano piece by Hazel Adams:
Some beautiful folk from Irish singer-songwriter and musician from Strabane, Paul Brady with The Lakes of Pontchartrain:
A rather different but style by Gorillaz, with beats and shimmering electronica, looking to body of water in Switzerland:
Heading into more obscure, experimentation, the thunderous, murky black waters of John From’s dark metal on Lacustrine Divination from his 2017 album A Stirring In The Noos:
But on a much lighter note, capturing the majesty of wings on water, Tchiakovsky’s timeless Swan Theme from the ballet Swan Lake of course …
And finally, an unavoidable but escapist, soaring Taylor Swift number, the original and a Long Pond seesions version … and a s namechecks Windermere in the Lake District.
This merely dips our toes in the musical and other water, so feel free to share anything more in relation to anything lacustrine, whether in music or wider culture, such as from film, art, or other contexts, in comments below.
