The beat goes on …
Now I generally already have a theme in mind, or the write-up and playlists reveal themselves as the week progresses. I’m a history and politics bloke really, so the drive to categorise, analyse and justify is strong. Of some past topics, drone music became a wonderful festival of drone, synth pop, music media, recreational drugs, and big and meaty songs. Easy-peasy.
I thought the raised heart would be straightforward, but little did I realise that the heart rate of a 57-year-old is raised by things that may not have raised the heart rate of a 7, 17, 27 or even 37-year-old. So I was surprised by how much post-punk and soul, salsoul, jazz and the rest got the old ticker a flutter and how little house, punk and grunge got me moving. Needless to say the ecstasy was left unused and even the cheaper speed went un-ingested.
Conversely, the resting heart was so much easier to compile, thanks to your great nominations. It’s an age thing I suppose. Much easier not to put too much stress on the pumpy thing.
Anyway, in the absence of a scientific or musicological explanation for these playlists I’ll just present them as is and let you go with the blood flow and feel the pulse. Safe in the knowledge that I used my years of 70s, 80s and 90s compilation tape experience to attempt to make sense of a heart skipping, and occasionally stopping, experience.
Essentially I am as confused as you are but as Grandpa Simpson once said: “I used to be with it, then it changed and now I don’t know what it is.”
