Another sublime voice, and here two songs from the New Zealander, whose voice coils out of still, acoustic guitar and piano, and reveals raw, intimate emotions awash with melancholic black humour. Self-described as gothic folk, the first is a newer song from 2017 which may appear on her next album, the second, more upbeat (for Harding) comes from her second album of the same year, ironically titled Party. Harding has large range, not only in terms of notes, but also style, from a warm, Nico-style folk misery to a more birdlike Joanna Newsom, but she never fails to summon up something quite otherworldly, mesmeric and enigmatic.
Sadly, I feel nothing
I'm so down on life
High people pull me into their faces
They are lucky
Elation came
When you chose me
Elation
I have not died
Though I've never tried
In relation
When they say, "Enjoy,"
I try so hard to …
The beauty is so close to me
The beauty is so close to me
Elation came
When you chose me
Elation
I have not died
Though I've never tried
In relation
The beauty is so close to me
The beauty is so close to me.
[Verse 1]
I'm going to answer, protecting
It can be so hard to forgive
It's not what I thought, and it's not what I pictured
When I was imagining my man
You are so nervous all of the time, living the classics
I know that imagining my man
Imagining, imagining my man
[Chorus]
All my life (hey!) I've had to fight to stay
You were right, love takes time, hey, hey
[Verse 2]
You have this dream, apparently I'm not done
I leave and it's dreadful
If you get there
Be honest, respectful
[Chorus]
All my life (hey!) I never tried to stay
You were right, love takes time, hey, hey
[Bridge]
I hope one dream will get that when we're
Lucky to be given the chance
I do not have the answer
But I don't have the wish to go back
[Chorus]
All my life (hey!) I've had to fight to stay
You were right (yes!), love takes time, hey, hey
All my life (hey!) I've had to fight to stay
You were right, love takes time, hey, hey.
