Two splendidly uplifting tracks from the 2016 album Singing Saw by the American singer-songwriter, born in Kansas but living in Brooklyn, formerly of Woods and also The Babies. His style is an indie folk rock, with echoes of Arcade Fire, Lou Reed and Teenage Fanclub. As these two videos and the lyrics show, Morby has a little bit of an obsession with cheating death, with a wistful, humorous twist on life's perspective. The first track has a beautiful piano part.
Oh, let's go hit the town
And we could fill the room up with smoke
You know I got the first round
As we tell all those stories told
And I would pretend you were new
Like I was just introduced to you
And all the music in my ears
Sounds beautiful down here …
The psychedelic guitar stands out here, alongside the church-style choir and punchy horn part, but again it has a strong chorus and wonderful momentum.
Calling out
Demanding answers
Pleading skies
Cry for hours
Dropping peace bombs
Collecting prayers
A sky that mirrors
A sky that stares, as I sing
I have been to the mountain
And I have walked on his shores
I have seen, but I can't see him no more.
