Following Islet, more from Fire Records with some new work of otherworldly beauty from the artist also known as Johnny Lynch, electronica folk musician and resident on the Inner Hebridean island of Eigg. Slow Memories is a strange tale of anthropomorphic thumbs and alien abduction, with a tone of melancholy, loneliness, pathos and longing. It has slight echoes of Mercury Rev, and it is taken from the new forthcoming partly space-themed album Thumb World. As Lynch says, the record touches on “life repeating and gradually degrading, the inevitable cyclical nature of things, and the sense of their ultimately being no escape.”
That said, while such themes could well be regarded as profound and serious, Lynch is also known for his sharp humour when performing, and is an affably amusing, eccentric and inventive character. He is part of a circle of Scottish musicians that includes King Creosote, James Yorkston and Malcolm Middleton, is one of the Fence Collective and is also known for running Lost Map Records, from which much previous material was released.
No Turning Back, the second song here, is also from the forthcoming album, and is more of a upbeat dancey number, with a slight parallel in style to Hot Chip, and yet also with a melancholy theme, making another digital connection about modern life: “Hours turning back … you and me trapped inside a device controlled by each others’ thumbs.” Sound familiar?
