From yesterday’s Cate Le Bon to another Welsh band, a new song by the Powys trio from their forthcoming LP Eyelet, a mesmerising experimental whirl of electro-pop psychedelia. Good Grief is a phrase that could be an exclamation for much that is happening in the world right now, but the phrase here is double-edged, in reference to a mixture of family events within the band – a birth and a death, and the song comes with an extraordinary video. The band employs an usual blend of acoustic instruments as well as keyboards, and might, for example, be seen beginning a live performance walking through the audience playing handbells. The result is a mixture of softness and and clanging hardness. Singer Emma Daman Thomas also has something of the Cocteau Twins’ Elizabeth Fraser in her hypnotic delivery.
Islet’s Eyelet is comes out on Fire Records. More of the band’s work can be found on Bandcamp.
