Taken from the soundtrack to the final series of the Peaky Blinders TV drama, a powerful new cover version by the British singer and guitarist of the traditional gospel and blues number attributed to Claude Ely (1922–1978) from Virginia. The stormy guitar playing, alongside Calvi’s powerful voice, captures a violent turmoil as Tommy, played by Cillian Murphy, wrestles with the prospect of his death, but also looks to defy it, just as Ely apparently did in fighting tuberculosis as a child in 1934. The song has been covered by various artists, including Johnny Cash on 2010’s American VI album, and here Calvi gives it a powerful and original new twist. She also composed the score for the fifth season. This song comes from a forthcoming EP which contains other covers including songs by Nick Cave and Bob Dylan. Out on Domino.
There ain’t no grave can hold my body down
There ain’t no grave can hold my body down
When I hear that trumpet sound I’m gonna rise right out of the ground
Ain’t no grave can hold my body down
Well, look way down the river, what do you think I see?
I see a band of angels, they’re coming after me
There ain’t no grave can hold my body down
There ain’t no grave can hold my body down
The light falls through the air
The light falls through the air
The light falls through the air
The light falls through the air
I see a band of angels and they’re coming after me
Well, look down yonder Gabriel, put your feet on and see
Well, meet me Jesus, meet me
Meet me in the middle of the air
Meet me in the middle of the air
Meet me Jesus, meet me
Meet me Jesus, meet me
The light falls through the air
The love falls through the air
The light falls through the air
Light falls through the air
