Capturing the tragedy and stardom of the industry, and name checking Greta Garbo, Rudolph Valentino, Bela Lugosi, Bette Davis, Marilyn Monroe, George Sanders, and Mickey Rooney, it has a beautiful, longing, wistful quality, and unusual for a Kinks song, is over six minutes long. The second single from 1972’s double album Everybody’s In Show-Biz, it failed to be a hit, but that didn’t stop it becoming become a much-loved classic, covered by many, including Tim Curry and Joan Jett.
