From yesterday’s film heroes and heroines, we move to 1977’s punk-pop paean to a variety of past greats, notably the painter and forger Elmyr de Hory, revolutionary Leon Trotsky, controversial comedian Lenny Bruce, fictional Don Quixote figure Sancho Panza and of course William Shakespeare and his era. Part of the angry wave of the time, the details are actually less significant than the quality of the music by an intelligent, aggressive punk band who could really play, from the persuasive power Hugh Cornwell’s vocal delivery, Dave Greenfield’s finger-dazzling keyboards, and the great drums and bass of Jet Black of Jean-Jaques Burnel, timeless musical heroes all to a generation. The song was one of their biggest hits, from the second eponymous album just five months the groundbreaking Rattus Norvegicus.
