DD Dumbo – Utopia Defeated
This debut album from Castlemaine's Oliver High Perry was preceded by a couple of promising singles with unhelpful comparisons to Jeff Buckley's Grace and the vocal stylings of Sting. Perry plays pretty much everything himself and co-produces with some skill and ambition.
DD Dumbo - Satan
Seasick Steve – Keepin' The Horse Between Me & The Ground
It's not been the best week for ol' Steve as his backstory of life before fame unravelled with revelations of a humdrum career as a jobbing musician rather than a train-hopping lovable hobo. Safe to assume it was at the behest of some PR wastrel – meanwhile Steve is left to get on with the music, with a country tinge to these tunes.
Seasick Steve - Grass Is Greener
C Duncan – The Midnight Sun
Second album from Glasgow's Chris Duncan has a lot to live up to after the Mercury-nominated Architect. The layered vocals are familiar but this album largely dispenses largely with the driving guitar based songs in favour of texture and electronics. Once again this set has been recorded in his bedroom and has an atmospheric autumnal feel.
C Duncan - Wanted To Want It Too
Goat – Requiem
Sweden’s enigmatic Goat may qualify as the greatest modern pop-culture mystery. Who are these masked musicians? Are they truly members of the Arctic community of Korpilombolo? Are their songs part of their isolated communal heritage? Requiem is intriguingly trailed as their "folk" album - there are certainly what appear to be panpipes on one track.
Goat - Alarms
Odd Nosdam – Sisters Remix
Kindred spirits Boards of Canada and Teebs make an appearance in dreamy collaboration with Odd Nosdam’s Sisters Remix EP. Throughout, the producers split time between cosmic, slow burning beats and reflective soundscapes littered with intriguing textures and mind-bending samples.
