Moody, dark, atmospheric, cross-genre inventiveness comes aplenty in this debut LP for Partisan Records by the Leeds-based collective who bring a hard-to-define fusion of ambient, restless electronica, shoegaze, goth, abstract industrial, krautrocky momentum, soulful trip-hop and alt-pop. There are variously echoes of Mount Kimbie, My Bloody Valentine, Björk, Burial and Massive Attack aswirl here, and the collective have four core members – George Mitchell, Matt Peel, Josh Lewis and Imi Marston, with a rolling cast of collaborators and visual artists including Kosi Tydes, Softlizard, Rarelyalways, Florence Shaw, and Liam Bailey. The latter certainly offers a dramatic, arresting vocal delivery on opener NO RIGHT 2 LOVE, while other standout tracks include the stormy, striking WWWWW?, the pumping sprightliness of MEASURE ME (featuring Softlizard), the woozy, dream-like TORMENTOR, and the closing track, PITY. Mesmeric, uncompromisingly different, authentically original new work, filled with fascinating experimental sounds, beats, moods and transitions. Out on Partisan.
