Blistering second album of glamorous rock by the trio from Boulder, Colorado, fronted by singer-songwriter Demi Demitro, and produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, with powerful numbers about heartbreak, but also the volatile truth of being an artist in the music industry while still clinging to the teenage joy of instruments. It’s catchy, meaty, gutsy work, and the title comes from Demitro remarking that: “As you grow older, the world makes you jaded. This album is about the hard truth that no matter how hard you protect your heart, it’s just going to be broken … and sometimes you realize that you’re the one stabbing yourself in the heart with a million knives.” Drummer Baby Pottersmith adds that the fastidious process of “making this record was like giving birth to knives”. But through the pain comes many fabulous numbers, often thunderous in sound, heralded by dramatic opener All These Little Things, but also filled with clever subtleties and dynamics, with other standouts including the very catchy On And On, the punchy Suck The Cherry, the string-bendy See Your Face, the chugging Bound In Leather and Take It From the Top. Go Fly Away meanwhile, more of a wistful indie-pop song expressing a wish for escape and freedom, was co-written with both members other The Black keys - Auerbach and Patrick Carney, who also produced it. The band also show their range with gentler numbers Up Here, or the dark, menacing bluesy Moonchild. Heaven is another standout, with a powerful, soaring chorus. The pain was all worth it. Out on Easy Eye Sound.
