A brilliantly inventive mix of dynamic, textured, vibrant jazz, funk, prog, African, and hip hop, from big band swing, boom-bap rhythms smooth, soulful vocals, all in a fifth LP the London keyboardist and producer. A whirlwind of improvisation unfolds from first to last but the overall theme, with the title, is about all the infinite variables that led him, and us, to where we are now. From the high-octane instrumental opener, Foreword, to the reflective, beautiful keyboards that accompany trauma-themed autobiography of hip hop of Borderline (“the day I get bored I’m borderline: three options – music, sport or crime”), to former Song of the Day, Aged Eyes, with Kaya Thomas-Dyke, with its beautiful guitar and string arrangements, not to mention Kaya’s voice, the breadth of these first three tracks testify to the sheer quality of this album. Other standouts include The Gist, Apho (with South Africa’s Bongeziwe Mabandla), the surging stillness of the title track, and restless, Santana-like epic closer, BC. Oozing with talent and invention from first to last. Out on Anti- Records.
