Another beautiful folk release, this the long-awaited full debut by established Kent-born Canada-based singer-songwriter who recorded this in the medieval walls of Wenlock Abbey, home to Nick Drake’s sister Gabrielle, who allowed us of her brother’s instruments. Delicate vocal harmonies abound in songs that are dreamily introspective and dreamy, written over a span of eight years during which Lucy experienced motherhood, breakups and other forms of heartbreak - classic songwriter material of course. Yet while there may be oodles of melancholy, the music itself, emanates more light than shade in the bittersweet, her clear, delicate voice, guitar picking and gentle electronica like dappled sunlight. Standouts include opener Paperthin, the sparse staccato of Snows Blowing Wild, the gradual, exquisite string build and steady rhythm of Keep On, the heartbreaking beauty of But For You, and among the many more lovely moments, the lapping waves of piano and ambient wash on the wistful closing title track. A very rewarding, rich listen, and certainly worth the long wait. Hopefully there’s more to come, and sooner. Out on Hudson Records.
