This eclectic album of hybrid hip hop, soul, pop, indie, R&B, and even a dash of folk by the North London rapper singer-songwriter Abubakar Baker Shariff-Farr is full of influences from Blur to King Krule, Tame Impala to Amy Winehouse, and his Tanzanian immigrant mother. Standouts include The Mission, Free, the powerful African-voiced intro that moves into Build Me A Way, the downtrodden love song Change of Heart, the acoustic opener Noun and the love song to his leafy London home area postcode in NW3. The album is full of oddities as well as bursts of rage, such as the shouty, punk Ginger Pubes, or Youthenasia, in which the 28-year-old declares he hasn’t seen his father for 15 years. Plenty of say here about a sea of struggles, and yet an artist who crosses genres with absolute freedom. Out on Black Butter Records.
