A beautiful fourth album by the acclaimed Montreal-born banjo player and singer-songwriter of Grenadian heritage, mixing folk, Americana and bluegrass with a palette of sounds – percussion, orchestral strings and brass in songs mixing history, politics and the personal. Following 2018’s Grenades album, which explored her father’s homeland, among the standouts is Fédon, is a fabulously evocative folk number with swelling strings, and using the album title within its lyrics, celebrating the leader of the 1795 uprising against British rule in Grenada. Other highlights include The Witch, duet with Aoife O’Donovan, which seems to pertain to a relationship as well as the history of patriarchal repression of women. In Montreal with Alison Russell reminds us of Kater’s brilliance with her instrument with a gorgeous scything melody overlaid and fabulous movement across other instruments. The Internet takes a critical eye to that medium, Maker Taker starkly address the music business. Floodlights meanwhiule bathes in serene beauty, superbly crafted History In Motion, her voice dancing playfully over the banjo, and then gentle acoustic guitar number, Tigers. Profound, and perfectly gorgeous. Out on Free Dirt Records.
